The Vindicator-class Assault Starfighter was a modification to the Vindicator-class chassis. Featuring a second weapons pod, with 4 laser cannons, 2 ion cannons, and two small proton torpedo launchers, it was extensively armed for assault missions. This additional weight lowered its top speed most noticeably in atmosphere where the shape disrupted slipstreaming enough for a four thousand kilometer per hour drop.
The torpedo launchers could be switched out for two TAR-MK-III 30mm cannons, and five thousand rounds between the two, but this limited its power against capital ships. So much was the drain on the ships power systems, due to the massive amount of weaponry on a ship so small, that it had a limited operation window. Its compact QuadFusion Reactor, while powerful, could not sustain the ships systems for more than a day, without risking permanent damage to the reactor, necessitating a replacement.
Its production run was limited do the extreme cost of building and maintaining a craft of such power at such a size. In total only 3 dozen were built for mainstream use, with custom ordered models being made every now and then. the 72 models that were produced were eventually phased out for the Brynhildr-class Assault Craft which also proved to be a flop but eventually adopted the role of long range patrol. In the end the Phoenix-class Strike Bomber filled the role the Vindicator left emtpy.
